Gertrude Witkop: 1927-2020
Gertrude Witkop, 93, of Marion, S.D., passed away on Oct. 22 at the Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion. A service will be held on Thursday Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at First Church of Monroe, with burial in the Spring Valley Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church one hour prior to the service. The family encourages all guests and visitors to wear a mask and follow Covid guidelines.
Gertrude Witkop, 93, of Marion, S.D., passed away on Oct. 22 at the Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion. She was born on June 7, 1927 in Montrose, S.D. to George and Ina (Dryer) DeGroot. Gertrude married Roscoe Witkop in 1947 and to this union five children were born. Gertrude and Roscoe enjoyed 44 years of marriage before Roscoe’s passing in 1992. Gertrude married Wesley Witkop in 1996. They enjoyed spending winters in Denver. Wesley passed away in 2003.
Gertrude was a long-time cook at the Tieszen Memorial Home. In her spare time she enjoyed Brazilian embroidery, dominoes and card games. She was also a life-long member of First Reformed Church (First Church of Monroe) of Monroe, S.D.
Survivors include her five children: Larry (Erci) Witkop of St. Thomas, USVI, Eldon (Kathy) Witkop of Marion, Janet (Fred) Herr of Rapid City, S.D., Dean (Lucy) Witkop of Marion and Julie (Timothy) Pond of Aberdeen, S.D; grandchildren: Jennifer (Patrick) Cisar, Elizabeth (Joshua) Lindner, Jon Witkop (Lora Fredrikson), Tressa (Derrek) Sattler, Cameron Herr, Joshua (Claudia) Witkop, Ashlie (Chad) Talcott, Alicia (Jay) Engebretson, Jonathan Witkop, and Boyce (Hayley) Pond; and 23 great grandchildren.
Preceding Gertrude in death are her parents; husbands, Roscoe and Wesley; two brothers and four grandchildren.
