Janice Engbrecht: 1955-2001
Janice (Jan) Elizabeth (Schock) Engbrecht was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend was called home to be with the Lord on Jan. 16, 2021 at the Sanford Cottage Hospice in Sioux Falls, S.D. after a short battle with breast cancer at the age of 65.
She was born to Arnold and Verna (Kuhfeld) Schock on Sept. 10, 1955 in Aberdeen, S.D. Her elementary education was in Salem, S.D. and attended high school in Salem, Montrose and Parker, S.D. and graduated in Forbes, N.D.
On June 17, 1973 she was united in marriage to Benny D Engbrecht. They made their home in Freeman, S.D. for three years before moving to an acreage east of Dolton, S.D. This union was blessed with a daughter and a son. Jan worked numerous jobs throughout her marriage to help support her family. She worked for Raven Industries, Hutchinson Technology, Ionics, and the Prairie Pumper; she also worked seasonal for eight years extracting honey.
Jan was a member of the Marion Jaycees for a number of years. She loved to crochet, knit and do stamping. She enjoyed making homemade cards for her friends and church family. It was a passion that she really enjoyed doing. Jan loved vacationing. The Big Island of Hawaii was her favorite vacation spot. She really enjoyed zip lining, hiking, supper cruises and whale watching. Sunsets became one of her most favorite times, knowing each sunset was a special creation that God gives us. She always said she had her own travel agent Ben with her and didn’t need anyone else.
Jan became a member of Bethesda Mennonite Church and was baptized in 1974. She grew in her faith through the years. She taught Sunday School and volunteered with the Sunlight Club.
She is survived by her husband, Ben Engbrecht of Dolton; daughter Angela Erickson of Sioux Falls; son Nick (Cherrie) Engbrecht of Marion; five grandchildren: Tristen, Taya and Jared Erickson and Ashley and Preston Engbrecht; mother Verna Becker of Huron, S.D.; two sisters: Bernadene (Randy) Martin of Koppel, Texas and Tammy (James) Claymore of Iroquois, S.D.; one brother, Willie (Aweont) Schock of Huron, S.D.; and a host of other friends and relatives.
She joins in heaven her dad, Arnold Schock; younger brother, Larry Schock; mother and fathers-in-law Daniel and Elva Engbrecht; grandparents Herman and Ella Kuhfeld; grandmother Martha Schock; and, later in life, stepfather Lewis Becker, who became very special to Jan.
A funeral was scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 10:30 a.m., with burial at Schartner Cemetery.
