20 MPH SPEED LIMIT NOW IN EFFECT IN FREEMAN
A citywide ordinance that lowers the speed limit in much of Freeman from 25 to 20 miles per hour went into effect Wednesday, Nov. 17. Unless otherwise posted, the new 20 mph limit impacts all streets in Freeman’s business and residential districts, while 15 mph remains the limit in school zones.
The speed limit on Sixth Street remains at 25 miles per hour from Cherry to Wynken Drive and 35 miles per hour from Wynken Drive to Highway 81.
The new speed limit is in effect per city council action Tuesday night, Nov. 16 when the council voted 5-1 to approve the second and final reading of the new ordinance. Councilor Charles Gering voted no.
New signage is anticipated in future months as Hutchinson County is currently in the process of replacing signs — for speed limits, street names and other designations — throughout rural areas and municipalities within the county.
Ordinance 2021-15 is noted in the “Breaking News” section at CityofFreeman.org and is posted in its entirety, along with other ordinances currently in effect, in the “Government” category.
The speed limit change was approved by a council vote of 5-1 after a second reading on October 19, with councilor Charlie Gering cast the dissenting vote.
Implementation of the lowered limit is intended to enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
