BEARCATS, WOLVES ELIMNINATED IN 4B ACTION

Girls basketball teams from Freeman Academy/Marion and Menno saw their 2022-23 seasons come to a close in the Region 5B Tournament Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The Bearcats, the region’s No. 8 seed, lost to Viborg-Hurley 84-14 in Hurley one night after defeating No. 9-seed Gayville-Volin 31-28. The Cougars, the defending Class B champion and No. 1-ranked team in the Class B poll, led 27-1 after the first quarter and 53-7 at the half. Jada Koerner led FA/Marion with 8 points and 3 rebounds, and Leah Goodwin and Alexa Gortmaker each had 2 steals. The Bearcats finished the season with a 7-15 record.

Menno, the region’s No. 7 seed, fell no No. 2-seed Centerville 66-32 in Centerville. The Tornadoes led 17-4 after the first quarter and 30-17 at the half before breaking the game open by outscoring Menno 20-8 in the third period.

Lexie McNinch and Layne Schmidt each had 7 points for the Wolves and Ashton Massey and Amanda Rames each pitched in 6. Rames led the team with 8 rebounds, Allison Lehr and Massey each had two assists and Massey and McNinch each contributed two steals. Menno finished its season with a 3-18 mark.
