Darnell Tschetter harvests soybeans in a field across Highway 81 east of Dollar General Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 10. Combines and other harvest machinery — and heavy clouds of dust made from dry land — can be seen across the horizon as area farmers work hard to bring in this year’s crop. Tschetter said he has one field of soybeans left and he is about halfway through corn, and reports moderate to strong yields — especially in the context of what producers brought in in 2021 and 2022. He reports a soybean crop of 30 to 40 bushels per acre, which is disappointing considering the potential in July, while corn crop is upwards of 200 bushels per acre in some areas — far better than the 2022 harvest. “Making up for last year,” he said.
