PHOTO OF THE DAY: STANDARD SUNDAY
This photo shows a portion of the clock face on the towering timepiece that has long been associated with Freeman’s Merchants State Bank, an independent financial institution that goes back to 1899.
The bank was originally located on the block north of its current location, in a building that would, decades later, became Walter Funeral Home and then The Kairos, and is today for sale. Merchants State Bank relocated into a new, two-story granite structure on its current located in 1913 and then built a new building immediately to the south in 1979. By 2000, the old granite structure had been removed and the bank had taken on a major expansion that filled the northern portion of the 300 block of Main Street — a project that marked the return of the grand old clock.
This photo is posted today to mark another switch from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time, which went into effect at 2 a.m. Sunday.
