GOSSEN WINS REGION 4B TITLE AT 113 LBS; FOUR OTHERS ADVANCE TO STATE
Freeman Public freshman Brody Gossen outwrestled Canton junior Landon Walker to claim a 4-2 decision and win the Region 2B championship at 113 lbs. Saturday afternoon in Canton. Gossen entered the tournament with a 44-2 record while Walker was 37-4.
Gossen’s effort at the region tournament earned him his second consecutive ticket to state; he competed at 106 lbs. as an eighth grader last season. He is joined by three others who earned top-four finishes on Saturday:
- Freeman Public freshman Logun Pankratz was third at 106 lbs.;
- Freeman Public eighth grader Easton Tschetter was third at 120 lbs.;
- Marion junior Keaton Preheim was third at 132 lbs. and was also recognized for his 100th career win.
- Marion-Freeman will also be represented at state by Marion senior Sarah Cremer, who is 11-9 and competes at 114 lbs. The girls tournament field is determined, not by a region competition, but by how they are seeded during the regular season.
Marion junior Finley McConniel, Freeman Public freshman Alaric Knittel and Freeman Public eighth grader Axle Schultz just missed making the state tournament cut, each falling in a match that would have qualified them for state. McConniel and Knittel both ended up fifth in the 126 and 144 lb. divisions while Schultz finished sixth at 138 lbs.
The Rebels were also represented on Saturday by Freeman Public freshman RJ Arnold, who competed at 215 lbs.
Also Saturday, Marion-Freeman head coach Chris Sayler was named Region 2B coach of the year.
Canton won the Region 2B title with 299 points. Parker was second with 186 points and Tri-Valley was third with 158.
Marion-Freeman finished seventh in the 11-team tournament with 95 points.
