PHOTO OF THE DAY: HISTORIC HOUSE
This is what is known as the Gottlieb and Karolina Schmitt House, which is the centerpiece of the Menno Heritage Museum in that town. Located just off Fifth Street (Menno’s main downtown roadway), the structure was acquired by the Menno Heritage Association in 1983, restored, and turned into a museum for the preservation of artifacts unique to the larger Menno and Olivet communities. A secondary home right next door — the Johann Preszler Home — is also part of the museum, an annex acquired by the Menno Heritage Association in 2001.
Today, museum officials are looking to the future and how to deal with the aging structures — particularly the Schmitt House which is no longer safe for public use. Watch for an announcement on plans later this spring.
