PHOTO OF THE DAY: YIKES!

This was the scene on the east side of the Dave Kaufman home in Freeman Tuesday morning, May 21 as stormy spring weather pounded the community. The 100-plus-year-old silver maple came down around 8:30 a.m. by a strong gust of wind, and underneath the felled tree is Kaufman’s pickup and camper. By 10:30 a.m. the cleanup was well underway thanks to assistance from some good Samaritans, even as rains continued. While there wasn’t widespread damage like this in other places in town, heavy rains produced up to 2 inches locally — more in rural areas — and even stronger sustained winds followed that afternoon.
