PHOTO OF THE DAY: RAINED OUT

What was supposed to be a haven for fishing was instead an empty Prairie Arboretum as gloomy weather prompted organizing officials to cancel the 18th annual Freeman Fishing Derby. An early morning shower made for wet grounds and light rain periodically during the later morning hours made it the correct call. This is the first time in the 20-year history of the event that it was canceled because of weather; there was no fishing derby in 2020 and 2021 because of a combination of Covid-19 concerns and trouble finding volunteers to help manage the event.
