BLACKSOX WIN DISTRICT TOURNAMENT OPENER
Freeman’s amateur baseball team took care of business in the opening round of the South Central League (District 6) Tournament Thursday night, July 25, taking care of Wynot 8-3. The Blacksox — the district’s No. 4 seed — will face No. 1 Tabor Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The No. 5 Expos will play again Sunday in an elimination game.
Action continues Friday with No. 3 facing No. 6 Menno at 6 p.m. followed by No. 2 Crofton against No. 7 Irene. All games are in Lesterville.
Freeman got the job done against Wynot on nine hits and just a single error. Bailey Sage had two singles, drew two walks and had three RBI to lead the offense while Jonah Hofer had a pair of hits and two RBI. Jake Weier, Jackson Fiegen and Lee Scherschligt all drove in a run.
Fiegen was sharp on the hill, giving up just five hits and striking out eight in six innings pitched. Trey Christensen took care of the final three innings, giving up a hit and a run.
The winner of Tuesday’s Freeman/Tabor game earns a spot in the state tournament and will play in the district championship Saturday, Aug. 3 at 6 p.m.
