16U STICKS, TRAPPERS IN CONTENTION FOR STATE BERTH

The Scotland/Menno Trappers and Canistota/Freeman Sticks are both in strong contention for a trip to the VFW 16B State Tournament.

Competing in Region 3, the Trappers won twice in pool play on Monday, taking out Baltic 11-1 and Canova 6-0. With Canova eliminated, Scotland/Menno will face Baltic again at 5 p.m. on Tuesday with a trip state on the line.

Baltic would have to win twice to eliminate the Trappers.

Meanwhile, competing in Region 4 on Monday, the Sticks defeated Garretson 13-6 and were leading Letcher 3-0 in the fifth inning when the game was postponed because of weather. That game will resume at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with action continuing at 5 p.m.

If the Sticks hold on against Letcher, Letcher would be eliminated, and Canistota/Freeman would play Garretson again with a trip to state on the line.

Garretson would have to beat the Sticks twice.

The 16-and-under state tournament is scheduled for Aug. 9-11 in Platte.
