PHOTO OF THE DAY: ARRIVAL ON THE PRAIRIE
Dan Flyger shares an account of the arrival of German settlers who migrated to America from the Black Sea region 150 years ago; listening attentively are Norman Hofer, S. Roy Kaufman and Marnette (Ortman) Hofer. The four local historians took turns at the lecture sharing various accounts of what happened after their ancestors had found their way from Russia and Ukraine to New York City and onto Yankton in Dakota Territory during an afternoon program Sunday, Aug. 4. Organized by Heritage Hall Museum & Archives, the 90-minute look back included perspectives from the Reformed and Lutheran faith (shared by Flyger), Hutterites/Prairieleaut (Norman Hofer) and Swiss Amish and Low German Mennonite (Kaufman), as well as a general overview of the arrival in Dakota Territory (Marnette Hofer).
