Marion eighth grader Maliyah Nankivel shakes hands with Freeman High School assistant coach Karissa Podzimek following the opening match of the 2024 volleyball season played as part of the Hanson Early Bird Tournament in Alexandria on Tuesday. Nankivel and the Freeman Academy/Marion Bearcats — winless a year ago — wasted no time in bettering their 2023 record with a 2-0 win over the Flyers. The FAM girls beat FHS 25-19, 25-18 to advance to the second round on Tuesday, where they fell to Andes Central/Dakota Christian 28-30, 20-25. The tournament concludes on Thursday.
Also opening their season on Tuesday was the team from Menno, which also started 1-0 with a 3-1 win over Alcester-Hudson. Set scores were in favor of the Wolves 26-24, 25-19, 25-27, 27-25.
