PHOTO OF THE DAY: CHURCH WORK
This photo shows construction of the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church in 1956 — the year before the new house of worship was used to replace the former wooden structure just to the south. The church building remains in use and will be the location of this weekend’s 150th anniversary celebration of the Swiss Amish, Mennonite, Hutterite and Low German arrival on the Dakota prairie beginning in 1874. An opening program will be held Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m., with a worship service starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday. There will also be tours of the historical markers erected in 1974 starting at 1:30 p.m. from the church and an evening program, “A Celebration of Choral Music,” Sunday night at 7 p.m. in Pioneer Hall.
