PHOTO OF THE DAY: SUNDAY SELECT
This now forgotten home that once was a destination for large gatherings and grand to-dos will be familiar to many who grew up in the community in the earlier and middle part of the 20th century. It was located one mile south of Freeman along what has been known locally as Spitzberger Road, the hilly township gravel that runs west and east along Spitzberger Lake and was therefore referred to as the Spitzberger House. It was something of a showpiece, according to Jeanette Krehbiel Wedel in a book titled “Swiss Volhynian Favorite Recipes,” who noted that it was “one of the largest and most elaborate homes in the community it its time.”
The structure, built in 1902, was abandoned but still standing to the east of the No. 8 green at Valley View Golf Course when it opened in 1993, but taken down in January of 1998 because of disrepair and infestation.
