PHOTO OF THE DAY: SCENIC SCENE
For those who attended the Salem Mennonite (South) Church in the early to middle part of the 1900s, this was a familiar scene. The church itself, located closer to the highway than it sits today, was built in 1908 with an addition and a parsonage (also pictured) constructed in 1917. Then in 1966, it all was replaced by a brand-new brick structure built further to the west to allow for a parking lot, as well as a new home for the pastor and the pastor’s family. That church building was destroyed by fire in 1985 (save the bell tower), with a new structure — similar in design — opening in 1987. PHOTO COURTESY OF RUDY BROCKMUELLER
