PETERS’ LATE 3-POINTER LIFTS FHS BOYS TO NARROW WIN

Luke Peters connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key with 4 seconds to play and a desperation three-point field goal that would have tied the game came after the final buzzer, and the Freeman High School boys escaped a scrappy Irene-Wakonda team with a 66-63 win.

The Jan. 7 win in Freeman moved the Flyers to 4-2 while the Eagles dropped to 2-4.

The game was close throughout with neither team holding a lead of more than six points. Irene-Wakonda led 15-14 after one, Freeman led 34-31 at the half and it was tied at 50 going into the fourth period.

Following Peters’ go-ahead three-pointer, Irene-Wakonda called a timeout and inbounded the ball under Freeman’s basket. A long pass across midcourt found the hands of senior Jens Hansen, who launched a deep three-pointer that banked in — but it was clearly after time had expired — and that was that.

This screenshot from the YouTube feed clearly shows the time at 0:00 and the ball still in the hands of Irene-Wakonda’s Jans Hansen.

David Walter had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Flyers while Tate Sorensen, Christopher Aasen and Luke Peters were all in double figures with 14, 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Also Tuesday night, the Freeman High School girls scored a win over Irene-Wakonda 49-23, moving the Flyers to 5-1 on the season. The Eagles dropped to 1-4.

Rylee Peters had 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals and Cadence Hofer and Lindsey Maske each scored 10 points. Peyton McCune dished out three assists.
