FHS BOYS COME UP SHORT AGAINST ST. MARY
A rough second quarter doomed the Freeman High School boys in their upset bid against Class B No. 3 Dell Rapids St. Mary in the Corn Palace Saturday night. The Flyers led 18-8 after the first period, but the Cardinals opened the second quarter on a 20-0 run and led 37-25 at the break.
Dell Rapids St. Mary ultimately won 68-56 and improved to 16-1; the Flyers dropped to 13-4.
The game was played as part of the DWU/Culver’s Classic held Friday and Saturday in Mitchell.
In two other games with local interest Saturday night, Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley lost to Class A No. 3 Rapid City Christian 59-38, while Class B No. 5 Howard defeated Parkston 53-49.
Viborg-Hurley and Parkston hold the top two spots in Region 4; Freeman is third.
Also on Saturday, Avon hosted the Great Plains Conference Classic, where the Scotland/Menno girls picked up their fifth straight win with a 41-36 victory over Irene-Wakonda (4-12).
The Freeman Academy/Marion girls also played in Avon and lost to Alcester-Hudson (3-13) 45-36 to drop to 3-13.
