LOSS TO AVON DROPS FHS GIRLS FROM NO. 3 TO NO. 4
The Freeman High School girls dropped from Region 4B’s third seed to fourth seed following a loss to Avon in their final game of the regular season Friday night — a game that had been rescheduled twice because of bad weather.
The Pirates hosted the Flyers and won handily 52-36 to improve to 11-6. For Freeman — which dropped to 15-4 — it was the lowest offensive output of the season.
The fall from No. 3 to No. 4 is significant because it puts the Flyers on the same side of the bracket as Class B’s best team in Centerville, the defending state champions who head into the postseason with a 20-0 record. While the Region 4B bracket had not been announced as of Saturday morning, it appears Freeman will face Gayville-Volin (15-4) in the first round on Tuesday, a team the Flyers narrowly defeated just last week; the winner facing the top-ranked and top-seeded Tornadoes.
Region 4B looked like this as of Saturday morning:
Centerville 20-0
Parkston 16-4
Viborg-Hurley 14-6
Freeman 15-5
Gayville-Volin 15-4
Avon 13-6
Tripp-Delmont/Armour 8-12
Alcester-Hudson 5-15
Irene-Wakonda 5-15
Freeman Academy/Marion 3-16
