A brand-new infield at Merchants State Bank Field soaks in the sun of a spring morning — a project of the Freeman Baseball Association. Chad Soulek and Lawns Unlimited rebuilt both the infield at the baseball diamond and also at the softball diamond to the north, wrapping up the weeks-long project last Wednesday, April 23. While the work is complete, Soulek said the new infields won’t be ready for play until the sod’s roots take hold, which could be three weeks out.
Jake Weier, player/manager for the Freeman Blacksox, said the amateur team’s first home game scheduled for mid-May might have to be moved to an away contest, and the high school baseball team — the Freeman/Canistota/Marion Sticks — have been playing their home games in Canistota.
And Dustin Tschetter, a coach with the Sticks, said should the team be in a position to host a playoff game later in May, there’s a chance it could be played in Freeman.
The Sticks have five regular-season games left: Home against Vermillion April 29, at Dakota Valley on May 4, at Centerville on May 7, at Irene-Wakonda on May 9 and home against Scotland/Menno on May 13.
