The first meeting of the year for the Freeman City Council looks to be a short one, with a relatively light agenda. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and can be live-streamed by using this link.

The superintendent/PreK-12 principal from the Rutland School District will be coming to Marion. Meeting in regular session Monday night, Jan. 9, the Marion School Board voted to offer the position of superintendent to Brian Brosnahan. The action came on a 6-0 vote and Brosnahan has accepted the offer.

Evelyn Hageman, 91, of Freeman, S.D., passed away on Jan. 4 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Walter's Funeral Home in Freeman with burial to follow at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.   

Heritage Hall Museum & Archives has been posting a “Main on Monday” photo weekly since last fall, and this is the photo that appeared on the museum’s Facebook page today. In includes the following description:

This was the scene inside the Freeman Junior-Senior High School gym early Sunday afternoon as more than 300 young grapplers — ages 4-12 — from more than a dozen schools gathered for the Marion/Freeman Little Rebels Wrestling Tournament. Wrestlers will compete in four divisions: Novice (2010-12), Midget (2013-2014), Bantum (2015-2016) and Tots (2017-After). Action was scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Donna (Mettler) Sutfin was born May 20, 1956 in Scotland, S.D. to Herbert & Lorraine Mettler. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Reformed Church, Menno, S.D.

Esther Weidenbach was born July 1, 1929 to Henry and Karolina (Mehlhaf) Streyle at the family farm near Freeman, S.D., and was the youngest of eight children. Esther passed away Jan. 1, 2023 at the age of 93 in the Scotland (S.D.) Good Samaritan Society. 

Saturday morning was another frosty one across the Freeman community, adding beauty to an otherwise tough stretch of winter weather.

Connie Renee Schaeffer, age 60 of Menno, S.D., passed into eternity to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Jan. 3, 2023 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, S.D. A funeral service will held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 9 at Peace Christian Reformed Church, Menno, with Rev. Travis Grassmid officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. A visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan.

It was a beautiful frosty morning across the community on Friday — a stark contrast to the fury that Mother Nature brought earlier this week.
